Initiatives: Declare Intent and Verify Continuously

Initiatives are Panaptico’s budget-level verification objects. An Initiative combines declared intent, the verified current state of your estate, gap analysis, a closed work loop, exception lifecycle, and trajectory. They are what executives fund, auditors audit, and boards review. Examples include “USB Exfiltration Prevention,” “Network Segmentation by Access Tier,” and “Zero Trust by office.”

What an Initiative contains

An Initiative is not a policy document. It is a living program that continuously verifies reality against your declared intent.

• Declared intent — the target state you define: which devices must be encrypted, which networks must be segmented, which accounts must have MFA
• Verified current state — the live result of System Sensors, Signals, Probes, and Atlas relationships against the Initiative’s scope
• Gap analysis — the difference between intent and reality, scored and prioritized
• Closed work loop — every gap becomes a Work Item with an owner; the fix is automatically re-verified
• Exception lifecycle — temporary or permanent exceptions are tracked with justification, expiry, and approval
• Trajectory — trend over time showing whether the Initiative is improving, degrading, or stable

How Initiatives work

You create an Initiative by selecting a scope (a Group from Identity Links, a set of entities from Atlas, or a tagged population) and defining the target state. Panaptico polls the relevant Sensors and Probes, evaluates Signals, and produces a score. When reality diverges from intent, Panaptico creates Work Items, routes actions if configured, and records the gap in the Initiative’s history. The trajectory view shows whether repeated gaps are the same root cause or new ones. This is what makes an Initiative useful for operational review: it tells you not just where you are, but whether you are getting better.

Example: Zero Trust by office

You declare that every device in the Tokyo office must be managed, encrypted, and enrolled in your zero trust agent. The Initiative scope is the “Tokyo Office” Group. On every poll, Panaptico checks each device against the target. A new contractor laptop appears in the office but is not yet enrolled. The Initiative marks the device off target, creates a Work Item for the IT lead, and updates the gap count. When enrollment completes, the next sensor read verifies the fix and closes the Work Item automatically.

When to use Initiatives

Use Initiatives when you need a continuous, scored, auditable program around a specific operational or security goal. They are the primary object for executive reporting, audit evidence, and board review.
